Clean Up

Like everything else at this school (or everything about animation for that matter) i like the process of clean up, its just that I rarely do clean up drawings, and my clean lines are often really rough. I am not crazy for clean up, but it's nice to sit and draw. I just prefer sketches, and can you really blame me? Sketches are awesome, matter of fact! Lucky for me our teacher, this week it's Slaven, don't want really clean lines. Life savior!

Anyways, back on track, it doesn't help that the character is Balto from, yeah you guessed it, Balto. Through that movie that dog changes design 5 billion times, just in our reference sheets he changes. So the task is to make it consistent and not necessarily make it look like Balto.

here is what i have so far, i slowed it down a bit in the last part, else you cant really see whats going on.

It is what it is. The animation we got was pretty ruff, and i think i did pretty okay, there's still some details to be fixed, and right now i can't see if the lines really are consistent or not, but i suspect they can be worked on still.

Penne-prøve

A little late update on last weeks penne-prøve.
5 students from the danish film school came here with animatics. Our class got divided into groups and we were given to a film school student, also called "our director" because that was their job, our job was to make the director happy.

My group, group 4, got a really nice director person by the name Claudia, really sweet and really good to work with. We started out with spending a whole day drawing the character, a day well spend i must say. At the end of the first day we all drew the character the same way and divided the scenes between us.

Our story was "uglerede", a owl moves into her new apartment after a breakup, and she is very sad about the situation.

These are my scenes.

scene 38, where she wipes away a tear:

and scene 45 where she kisses a heart shaped photograph before tossing it out the window:

all in all it was a good week for my group, we really were a team. We communicated well inbetween the animators and the director, and the director knew what she wanted while she still were large enough to take suggestions from us. I'd really like to work with her again actually.

All this was overlooked by our most skilled teacher Fabian Erlinghäuser, who works for Cartoon Saloon. We wish he comes back again sometime.

Ruff Hug

acting class: interaction hug from edith bach on Vimeo.

Rough animation of Kala from Tarzan hugging Hogarth from Iron Giant. OK you can't see that it is Hogarth but he is so difficult to draw and i didn't want to spend too much time making him look right before I'd got the animation right.

England, summer of 2010

Last summer I went to London, met some interesting people..

Who had some interesting idea's ..
Some wanted a tattoo

And I got this annoying song in my head for days. My buddy and I did NOT approve..

Obviously.

But all in all a pretty awesome trip. I'm going back there.

Random glimpse into the past is caused  by my findings of the sketchbook. It was hiding you see.

Inbetweening Ashling

Inbetweening week one.
We were given the extremes and breakdowns for this wonderful scene from the movie "Secrets of Kells", which you really should see if you haven't. It's an experience for the senses .. well for me anyways.
Back on track, the assignment was to inbetween this scene, and it fast became really clear that this was a hard one, so i prioritized making at least one inbetween between each keyframe, but making them right.

I've spend soooo much time on each drawing, I'm usually faster. Guess it's because I had to think a lot, which I'm not too familiar with while drawing. I got really into this. I really enjoyed it because it was almost hypnotizing, but at the same time it was really draining. And there's still a lot of mistakes, but certainly less than there would be than if I went for finishing instead of getting it right. I'm pretty satisfied with how this went. I got to try some new things <3

Fallen angel.

Vacation have been busy, unfortunately not much animation have been made this week. I went to "middelaldercenteret" on Falster, a center that gives the visitors a tour in the everyday life in the year 1400. GREAT place to sketch, even though i was fast to take in the stories of dead horses with three legs, ghosts, little men in hills that hate iron and werewolves. I liked this sketch very much, and ended up finishing it and correct some stuff in photoshop.

sad little john

the "sad little john" i did as a straight-ahead. The fruit of a week with an artblock.
I was very sad to be useless a mere week before the vacation, especially with the rest of the class so productive and two great teachers, Mike Nguyen and Frederik.

I feel that i was very lucky with this.

Seaweed

So here are the seaweed assignment.

I have been animating a ball with attitude (hideous) and well... it's quite the hideous animation. It might be up later next week.

Frog and fly from edith bach on Vimeo.

There. That's the right video. The fly isn't fully animated, there isn't even keyframes om half of it, so for the half part you'll have to imagine the fly. I'd like to fix this some time, but lets see.

full speed ahead

The 4th week at the animation workshop is soon upon us. As the two first weeks was projects with the CG Artists, this coming week will be our second week with learning the basics. So far i have managed to animate a pendulum, 2 bouncing balls (one which i will have to redo later on) and a 10 second frog animation. Quite okay for a weeks work considering i was sick in bed 2 of the days.

Can't wait for next week!
